I like to make it with puréed watermelon and homemade lemonade; you can garnish it with a watermelon slice too if you prefer. Sure doesn’t get any better, does it? Keep reading to learn all about this simple and easy watermelon recipe 💚
You may have noticed, some of your favourite beverages are incredibly sugary—and, thus, full of calories. Not with this watermelon lemonade, though! It skips the calories (believe it or not, it’s sugar-free) and makes sure you still stay refreshed.
Chugging down 2 to 3 litres of water is no easy task, I understand. So why not make hydration more fun (and flavourful!) with this refreshing watermelon lemonade?

Planning a baby shower for a girl? Going for a poolside party? Eager to beat the heat? Look no further than watermelon lemonade. This bubbly drink will taste perfect however—and whenever—you like!
Watermelon. The main star ingredient (of course). You’ll need a fully ripe and juicy watermelon for this recipe. Remember, the better the watermelon tastes, the tastier the lemonade will be. Tip: Since we will blend and strain the lemonade, a watermelon with a not-so-good texture but great flavour will work.
Lemons (freshly squeezed). Add the tartness (and a good quantity of Vitamin C) to the drink. I wouldn’t recommend using store-bought lemon juice. It “works,” but doesn’t taste anywhere near as good. Note: Follow the tip under the “Pro-Tips” section below to learn how to extract the most juice from the lemons.
Mint (fresh leaves). For the refreshing herbaceous flavour. They’re also a good source of antioxidants and vitamins.
Carbonated water. It gives the drink a bit of drama with some fizz and bubbles. Plain water is also an option, but it will lack the bubbly texture—and also the added health benefits of carbonated water.
Limes (some freshly squeezed, some sliced). To introduce a complementary zesty flavour. Don’t forget to save a lime for garnishing at the end.
Ice. Crushed ice, ice cubes, or ice chips can be used.
Note: All weights are approximations due to variants of contents and ingredients.
Prep the watermelon. I cut the skin off the melon; some like to scoop it out. (Optional: Remove the seeds, but this also removes some nutritional content, especially protein).
Blend the base. Add the watermelon chunks, lemon juice, and (half of the) mint leaves in a blender. Blitz on high speed for about 30 seconds.
Strain (optional). If you prefer a smooth texture, strain the blended mixture into a jar. I personally like enjoying some bits and pieces in the drink.
Add ice and carbonated water. Toss crushed ice into the jar containing the blended mixture. Then add carbonated water and stir well.
Top with lime. Mix in the squeezed lime juice and top the drink with the remaining pieces.
Serve. Fill serving glasses with ice. Pour out the drink from the jug and garnish with your favourite toppings (mint, lime wedges, etc.).
Time to enjoy 🍉 😋
Substitution ideas—
Oranges or pink grapefruit instead of lemons.
Fruits like strawberries or grapes instead of watermelon.
Basil instead of mint.
Add-ons—
Add edible flowers or a lime wheel.
Blend in a scoop of protein powder.
Garnish with a watermelon slice.
To prepare watermelon lemonade, you will need—
High-speed blender/whisk
Sharp knife
Lemon squeezer
Large jug
Serving glasses
Minimise mess - Use a strainer that fits the opening of your drink jar well.
Extract maximum juice from lemons - Roll the lemons between the counter and your palm for a minute or two. You can also microwave it for 20 seconds (this is particularly helpful if you store the lemons in the refrigerator). Now simply cut and squeeze them as usual. You’ll be surprised at how much extra juice you get.
Enhance the intensity of the mint - Soak the mint leaves in hot water for a few minutes before blending. Muddling a few mint leaves at the bottom of each glass before pouring the drink is also a good idea.
Add extra flavour - Use watermelon or lemon ice cubes instead of plain ice cubes.
Prepare for larger gatherings - Double the ingredients—according to the measurements on the recipe card below—to share the drink with your family and friends. The recipe in the card serves 6 and you can up to 10x this—to get yourself up to 60 delicious drinks for a big garden party if you wish 🥳
Keep the lemonade cold without diluting the drink too much - Use lemonade ice cubes instead of plain ice cubes. Create lemonade ice cubes by freezing leftover lemonade in an ice cube tray. These will slowly melt without watering down the drink.
Look for the field spot (the area where the watermelon rested on the ground). Creamy or yellowish means ripe, white or green means it’s not yet ready.
Check the weight. A heavy watermelon means a high water content.
Listen to the sound. A hollow/dull sound indicates ripeness.
Observe the appearance. The rind should be dull (not shiny).
If you still end up with a bland watermelon, don’t be sad. A drizzle of vegan dandelion honey or a spoonful of maple or agave syrup can make up.
Nothing to worry about. The watermelon juice separates and sinks to the bottom. It’s just a gravity thing, honestly. Simply stir the juice to combine the contents again before enjoying.
Look for a deep yellow spot and a hollow sound when tapped—signs of ripeness!
Definitely. Watermelon lemonade tastes great in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. For longer storage (and a more fun idea), store the lemonade in zipzicles or reusable ice lolly moulds to enjoy colourful, mess-free freezies later.
You can serve this lemonade with almost everything and anything.
