Vegan Green Smoothie

Why This Recipe Works

I’ve said so much about the smoothie up there, but there’s still more!

Treats Your Taste Buds…

We’re such a smoothie family—and the blender is one of the most used appliances in our home. Ever since I’ve created this recipe, we have it at least twice a week, and sometimes even more. You’d probably be able to guess how delighted my family (especially my husband) was when they first tried the tropical green smoothie.

…and Appeals Your Eyes

I know some people are turned off by a weird smoothie colour. But this one is different. It’s such a pretty, inviting shade of green that BEGS to be sipped every other day.

Are all smoothies can be enjoyed empty stomach?

Not all smoothies can be enjoyed on an empty stomach. Some are high in sugar, others are made with dairy milk (which causes acidity early in the morning). My vegan tropical smoothie is a one-in-all drink that is…

  • Delicious

  • Sugar-free

  • Lactose-free

  • Low-calorie

  • Healthy

So you can have it on an empty stomach without worrying about a glucose crash 🥳

Can Be Customised

I’ve tried this recipe so many times, with so many different ingredients. So I now have a substitute for almost every ingredient of this recipe—find them below in the “Variation Ideas” section.

Recipe Ingredient Notes

Greens. For the leafy greens, I recommend using spinach if you’re new to smoothies. It has a milder flavour than kale—one that is easy to mask with fruits. Plus, it’s super easy to blend. If you’re more experienced with green smoothies, you can consider kale (it also comes with some extra nutrients). Alternatively, you can try the drink with chard. Or, better yet, a mix of all three greens? The combo works for me!

Fresh mango chunks. Mango is my favourite fruit for a green smoothie! But I also like to switch things up with blueberries, peaches, strawberries… and, sometimes, a mix of ‘em 😋

Fresh pineapple (or canned). I use pineapple for some extra sweetness (the natural way). It’s also great for digestion.

Fresh ginger (peeled). If you want your exotic smoothie to be an anti-inflammatory and immunity-boosting drink, ginger is the secret. It also adds warmth to the freshness of the fruits. Perfect contrast!

Sunflower seeds. I like to add seeds to almost all my smoothie recipes—even berry oat smoothie—and this tropical drink is no exception. It’s because this tiny ingredient has sooo many nutrients. You’ll also notice that they make the smoothie so much creamier.

Lime juice (freshly squeezed). A little citrus juice never hurt anyone. It adds so much flavour to a green smoothie, in my opinion.

Oat milk. My usual liquid choice for an exotic smoothie. Oat milk makes for a creamy texture, as well as a good source of fibre. Any plant-based milk works, though.

Cooled herbal tea. Yup, your favourite herbal tea can make its way into this smoothie! Just be sure to allow it to cool fully before blending. It will give the smoothie a boost of antioxidants—and flavour, of course.

Pea protein powder. The final and most important ingredient. Since we’re using oat milk, pea protein powder can make up for the higher protein content of soya milk. I use neutral-flavoured protein powder to make sure it doesn’t alter the flavours.

Equipment

  • High-speed Blender (a whisk will do as well)

  • Sharp knife

  • Lemon squeezer

How to Make Plant-Based Exotic Smoothie

Prepare the ingredients: Wash the greens, peel the fruits.

Blitz: Add all the ingredients to the blender, and blend on high speed. You want to do this until you get your desired consistency.

Aaand, enjoy your smoothie! 😋

Pro Tips for Making Vegan Tropical Smoothie

  • I normally use fresh leafy greens, but frozen work too—no need to thaw.

  • Be sure to use fresh ginger (not powdered). If you don’t have a high-speed blender, you can grate the ginger.

  • If those leafy chunks are your pet peeve… Blend the greens first with the liquid ingredients, then add the rest of the smoothie contents. This is especially helpful if you don’t have a high-speed blender.

  • Pre-soak the sunflower seeds for about 2 hours.; it’s going to make the blending so much easier.

  • Don’t keep the blender running continuously. You want to blitz it in pulses to make sure all the ingredients spread evenly.

  • If your exotic smoothie isn’t sweet enough—try adding natural sweetness with options like pitted dates, dried figs, maple syrup or agave syrup.
