Let's Be Friends!
Lassi is an absolute favourite in our family. No lunch, dinner, or party is complete without this refreshing drink. So, when shifting to a vegan lifestyle, I knew I HAD to find a plant-based version of the most demanded drink at our family get-togethers.
After trying a few different recipes, I finally found THE one. It replicated the taste of non-vegan lassi to an extent that my friends didn’t even realise it was vegan!

The vegan mango lassi combines tons of healthy nutrients into one delicious drink. Here’s a quick breakdown of the benefits—
The vegan mango lassi takes only 10 minutes to come together. All you have to do is gather the ingredients and blend them together.
I love enjoying mangoes during the hottest months of the year. And now that I’ve discovered this super delicious plant-based mango lassi, I always have mangoes at home. This recipe allows me to pair the sweet, creamy flavour of mango with the zesty tangy taste of yoghurt. It’s the perfect way to treat yourself to a light, chilly, and protein-rich drink.
Vegan lassi tastes exactly like the classic lassi. Unbelievable? Try it yourself. It has the perfect consistency, sweetness, and tangy kick. You’ll get addicted.
Fresh mango (or mango pulp). The key ingredient. It gives the vegan lassi its creamy, rich taste and a tropical flavour. Tip: Choose ripe mangoes for the best results. Red mangoes or Alphonso mangoes work really well for this recipe.
Plant-based yogurt (or soft tofu). I usually make homemade vegan yogurt, but you can use store-bought versions, too. It gives the lassi a tangy kick and a creamy base. Tofu, on the other hand, contributes to a neutral taste, creamy texture and adds an extra protein boost.
Plant-based milk. It thins out the lassi to a drinkable consistency. Tip: Choose a flavour that complements the mango, like almond milk or coconut milk.
Cardamom powder. This amazing spice adds a floral aroma and a touch of warmth to the drink. I think cardamom and mango are meant to go together!
Rose water. Though optional, it’s the perfect ingredient to add subtle sweetness and a mouthwatering aroma.
Agave syrup (or maple syrup). You’ll need to adjust the amount depending on how sweet the mango is.
Crushed ice (or ice cubes). This chills the lassi and creates a frothy texture.
Let’s whip up the vegan mango lassi in three simple steps.
Peel and cut the mango into cubes/slices.
Add all the ingredients to a blender and blitz for a silky smooth texture. Adjust the consistency by adding more mango/yogurt (if too thin) and more milk (if too thick).
Serve, garnish, and enjoy!
The vegan lassi can be customised to make sure your taste buds don’t get bored.
Substitution Ideas
Frozen mango chunks instead of fresh mango
Vegan dandelion honey instead of agave or maple syrup
Cinnamon instead of cardamom
Variation Ideas
Replace mango with pineapple
Swap cinnamon for ginger
Add canned light coconut milk in place of regular plant-based milk (this will add healthy fats but also extra calories)
Add-ons
Banana for a boost of energy
Plant-based protein powder
Your favourite green powder
An avocado for a dose of healthy fats
A sprinkle of hemp seeds for an omega-3 boost
A drizzle of plant-based chocolate syrup for a sweet treat
Though the vegan lassi recipe is super easy (the hardest part is cutting the mango 😆), here are some quick helpful tips to go through before blitzing the ingredients.
Frozen mango (instead of fresh mango) can dilute the lassi. Use less milk to adjust the consistency accordingly.
If using tofu, soak it in hot water for 10 minutes to soften it and create a smoother lassi texture.
Pre-chill all ingredients, especially the plant-based milk and ice, for an extra refreshing and frothy lassi.
The riper the mango, the less sweetener you’ll need. So don't mix in a fixed quantity of maple syrup right away. Add it gradually, taste, and adjust.
For an ultra-smooth lassi, especially if using fresh mango with natural fibre, strain the blended mixture through a fine-mesh sieve.
Yes. Compared to traditional lassi, the vegan mango lassi recipe is lower in calories. Tofu adds creaminess and extra protein with potentially fewer calories, while natural sweeteners help cut down on the consumption of unhealthy refined sugars.
Here are a few additional tips to make sure your weight loss goals are not compromised in any way.
Minimise the natural sweetener.
Use unsweetened plant-based milk.
Drink it as a snack replacement.
Stick to a reasonable serving size.
I personally like purchasing honey mangoes when they are not fully ripened (still somewhat yellow in colour). Then store them in a shaded (but warm) spot in the kitchen. They will soon start ripening and change in colour from yellow to a deep golden colour. The mangoes will also develop slight wrinkles and feel tender to touch—this is the best time to enjoy them.
Once a mango is ripe, it is best to store it in the fridge to stop the ripening process.
First and foremost, make sure the lassi is fully chilled. To do so, pre-chill the ingredients, add ice, and serve the drink in chilled glasses.
You can then drink the lassi alone (trust me, it tastes heavenly!) or pair it with ideas like;
Almond or coconut milk enhances the flavor, but oat or soy milk also works well.
Yes! Use silken tofu or coconut cream for a creamy texture.
Vegetable Biryani
Granola bars
Light sandwiches
And don’t forget to decorate the lassi with delicious toppings. You can decorate it with anything you have on hand. Chopped nuts, fruit chunks, mint leaves, dried rose petals, candied ginger, a dollop of plant-based yogurt, you name it!
